Growing up in the country, there were a few things I’d find on every menu in my small town: a tall glass of sweet iced tea, fresh eggs from the local farms, and fried chicken. When in doubt about what to order, what to cook for dinner, or what to bring to the neighborhood potluck, the answer was always the same. So when I discovered this incredible (and relatively light) recipe for fried chicken wings, I was more than thrilled to try them and compare them to the ones I enjoyed back home.
And wow, did they compare! These wings are lightly fried to perfection, juicy and tender to the bone, and have a subtly spicy kick I couldn’t resist if I tried. Sprinkle fresh cilantro and squeeze a little lime over them before biting in, and they have a Cajun flavor reminiscent of a hot and sticky summer in Louisiana. Of course, for me, they’re reminiscent of home… which just makes ‘em taste 10 times better.
All in all, these fried chicken wings take about an hour to make. But technically, half of that is just preparing the marinade and letting them rest awhile, so pour yourself one of those tall glasses of tea and do the same while you’re waiting!
Are Fried Chicken Wings Healthy?
I’m not going to sugarcoat it… or rather, batter it up: anything fried typically takes a loss on “healthy” points. But as far as fried foods go, these chicken wings aren’t so bad! Chicken is a lean protein, so it’s great for gaining and toning muscle, and the ingredients in this particular recipe are relatively light. Plus, the taste is sooo worth it.
If you do want to go a healthier route with your chicken wings, try air frying them instead of deep frying. Air frying is the healthiest way to make fried chicken wings, since there’s no added oil or fat used in the frying process.
Can I Use A Different Cut Of Chicken?
There’s no rule saying you have to make wings out of this recipe! I mean the recipe says so, but I’ve always been an advocate for taking creative liberties in the kitchen. Personally, I think this flavor would work great with chicken tenders, which you can easily bake instead of frying to reduce the fat.
You can also use chicken thighs if you remove the skin and bones and slice them before marinating, or you might even consider making a Cajun chicken sandwich inspired by this recipe!

Fried chicken wings are best served hot and fresh, but you can easily store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. To reheat, just warm them in the oven at 300°F until warmed through.
If you’re cooking with oil as the recipe suggests, make sure to let the oil cool, then pour it into a bottle with a cap and discard. You never want to pour oil down the drain as it can damage your pipes.
If you want to air fry your chicken wings, follow the recipe exactly up until the deep-frying step. Place your wings in a single layer in your air fryer and cook them for about 10 minutes at 400°F. Flip and cook for another 10 or so minutes, until they’re golden brown and cooked through.
These fried chicken wings are super flavorful without much effort, but if you want a richer flavor, just let them marinate longer. I typically allow my wings to marinate for a few hours before cooking them, just so they can really soak up those Cajun flavors. You can also adjust the amount of hot sauce in the recipe to your liking.
Serving Suggestions
What aren’t wings good with? From game days to pool parties, I’ve enjoyed these fried chicken wings just about every way you can imagine. You can serve them alongside other classic party dishes like Potato Salad, Mac and Cheese, or Fries. You can go a healthier route with a green like Brussels Sprouts. But if you’re asking me, I would enjoy this dish with a classic country side: cornbread. This one from FFF is my favorite, and it’s vegan!
