This delicious burger’s origins take us to the west coast of the US, to California. The Golden State is synonymous with avocados. They produce most of the avocados consumed in the country, and every menu (that I’ve seen) includes several choices that feature this green fruit. Yes, avocado is a fruit. Before the avocado became the most sought-after $5 upcharge, we had plain ol’ cheeseburgers – also from California!
A hundred years ago, as the story goes, a teenager working at his father’s sandwich shop in Pasadena, CA, decided to top a burger patty with a slice of cheese, and supposedly that is how the cheeseburger was born. I feel like many things come from Cali (hello Silicon Valley) but I was surprised to learn the cheeseburger was one of them. Maybe because I associated the state with avocados and vegetarians. Either way, we have that great state to thank for avocados and burgers and, ultimately, our delicious avocado burger that we’re making.
I enjoy picking out my burger toppings as much as the next person, but I appreciate a burger already done with specific ingredients. Remember our swoon-worthy Hawaiian Pizza Burger or the spicy Jalapeño Popper Burger? Nobody would just pick those toppings without your foodie expertise. The avocado burger is like a timid version of these flavorful guys. So, construct the burger for your guests instead of putting out toppings and asking what people want. The crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, and buttery avocado go perfectly with the savory burger and the kick of pepperjack cheese.
Is Avocado Burger Healthy?
This dish is a one-stop shop for a balanced meal. We have the burger which is high in protein, iron, and B12, and avocado which has healthy fat and is rich in nutrients and fiber. Additionally, it is topped with lettuce and tomato which are high in fiber, folate, and vitamin K. By choosing whole wheat burger buns, we even get more nutrients than we would with traditional white buns. You can choose to leave the bun off and eat the burger with just a lettuce “bun” or with a fork and knife. This option has fewer carbs and is keto-friendly, too.
The Secrets to A Juicy Burger…
There are endless tips for the “best” burger, but all you need to do is keep your burgers juicy. To do so, don’t buy too lean meat. The 80/20 ratio is perfect. Additionally, do not over-season or over-salt it, and do not overwork it when forming patties. Some of the wild tricks that I have tried and liked include:
- Salt right before grilling
- Add an ice cube to the middle
- Shred frozen butter into the meat
Interesting. Right? Let me know if you try any of these and how they worked for you!

FAQs & Tips
You can store your avocado burgers cooked or raw in an airtight container for 2 days. Reheat cooked burgers in the microwave or on a pan on low heat. For uncooked burgers, allow them to reach room temperature and then grill accordingly. Store toppings separately.
You’ll want to use medium-high heat to cook your burgers. The temp should be about 375 degrees F.
Nope, your avocado has turned brown because of oxidation. It is perfectly safe to eat and may taste different. If you have just cut the avocado and see brown you can cut those parts off, but you don’t have to. If you cut it a while ago and noticed it’s brown, just mash it up and make it more like guacamole and you’ll be good to go!
Serving Suggestions
This avocado burger is a nutritious and practically full meal. But a burger needs a side like Batman needs Robin. Instead of the traditional fries, elevate your meal with gooey Homemade Cheese Fries, dreamy Smashed Potatoes, or aromatic Truffle Fries.
After the level of savory we’re serving up here, you’ll need a little sweet. Imagine we’re eating these avocados on a gleeful summer evening, so let’s go for something cool. The night before you can make homemade Frozen Yogurt or to-die-for Chunky Monkey Banana Bowls.
Avocado Burger

- 4 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 avocados
- 1 large tomato
- Lettuce leaves

Prepare the avocado by slicing it in half, removing the seed, peeling, and cutting into slices.
-
Slice the tomato into rounds.
-
Preheat your grill or pan over medium-high heat.
-
Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into four 8-ounce patties, making them slightly larger than the buns. Press a thumbprint into the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.
-
Grill the patties for about 4 minutes on the first side.
-
Flip the burgers, add a slice of cheese to each, and place the buns cut-side down on the grill. Continue cooking to your desired doneness, about 2 to 4 additional minutes for medium.
