When I was younger, lifting heavy barbells three days a week was easy. But between running a business, raising two kids, and getting older, heavy free weights started beating up my body. Recovery got harder, and my shoulders and lower back took the hit. Ultimately, we need to train for longevity, not just short-term performance.
To fix this, I added a cable machine and a Smith machine to my home setup. That filled the gaps dumbbells miss—giving me variable pulling angles for shoulder health, rotation for core strength, and safe guardrails so I can lift consistently without pain.
