Strawberry Cobbler, think deep dish pie surrounding a crusty disguise.
Table of Contents
One of my all-time favorite desserts is a fresh cobbler made with fillings of all sorts! If you haven’t tried a cobbler, it’s similar to a deep-dish pie. It’s a classic American dish consisting of a fruit filling poured into a large baking dish and covered in a buttery batter. It is so easy to make and a staple recipe for many due to its flexibility – the fruits you bake into this dish can easily change with the seasons. Don’t have the same fruits on hand? Simply use what you have, it is safe to mix and match.
Is Strawberry Cobbler Healthy?
Regarding desserts, this cobbler is on the healthier side of things. Any recipes made with whole foods are the way to go. Strawberries are rich in vitamins and high in antioxidants. For dairy-free options substitute butter with coconut oil, milk for a plant-based alternative and swap out the refined flour for almond or coconut flour. Regarding the sugar content, coconut palm sugar is a great replacement and has a lower glycemic index. I also love to include oats in the topping mixture for additional fiber and a textured crunch.
More than Strawberries to choose from…
Fresh strawberries are the main ingredient and best part about this recipe. However, all fruits are welcome here! If you have some extra fruits on hand you would like to throw in please do. The magic here is all in the sauce. The juices that flow and the aromas released from the baked fruits are divine. I suggest mixing in some rhubarb with your strawberries, too. The vibrant magenta color that develops when these two are cooked together makes for the most beautiful dessert. No rhubarb on hand? No problem. Another house favorite fruit for making cobblers is peaches. Baked peaches also deliver the most scrumptious bite!

FAQs & Tips
To prep in advance, start by cleaning, stemming, and slicing your strawberries. Then prep your batter by mixing together all of the ingredients and placing in a container. Refrigerate both your fruits and cobbler crust mix for up to 3 days before use. When it’s time to bake simply oil up your baking dish and combine ingredients.
For longer storage, transfer the cooked cobbler to a freezer-safe airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Just remember to thaw it in the fridge overnight before reheating in the oven until warmed through.
No one wants a dense, tough cobbler. We want a flaky crust cooked with just the right touch and crunch. Be warned and avoid over-mixing. If anything, less mixing is better. Layering strawberries is also an important key, place the strawberries on top of the batter without mixing them in. It allows for the cobbler crust to rise and envelop the strawberries.
You really want to see the juices ooze out from the top. It’s a sign your cobbler is cooked to perfection and ready to make its grand entrance. Bake until the top is bubbly and golden brown, which usually takes about 45 minutes. Cool before serving your cobbler. You want the flavors to meld and the texture to set.
Serving Suggestions
This crumbly crust and gooey berry filling will not disappoint. It is tradition to serve the hot cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of homemade whipped cream on top! Maybe even add a dash of cinnamon and a light sprinkle of sea salt for added flavor.
And although the strawberries can be a bit of a runny mess, the taste makes the case. The creamy vanilla ice cream paired with the slightly tangy syrup from the fruit juice in the cobbler – pure deliciousness.
