Beat the blues with this Green Tea Shot—a powerful potion that flavors an Irish whiskey base with peach schnapps, sour mix, and a dash of lemon-lime soda.

I’m not one to limit my menus to the calendar. I mean, if I want turkey in the middle of summer, I’m going to make it. Cinnamon hearts in September? Why not? Apple pie on Valentine’s Day? You betcha. The same thing can be said about this Green Tea Shot. Sure, it’s green and contains Irish whiskey, but do I limit it to St. Patty’s Day? Heck, no!
I also don’t reach for a bag of green tea to make it. Why it’s called a Green Tea Shot, then, is beyond me. You’d be better off asking the college students frequenting the bars and clubs in Madison, Wisconsin, in the early 2000s. That’s where it’s purported to have originated. I presume the ‘green’ in the name comes from its brilliant color, similar to that of—you guessed it!—green tea.
Which Whiskey is the best to use?
Well, that brings me to my next point. While some blame/thank Madison bar-goers, others think the in-house mixologists at Jameson Whiskey concocted it to increase sales, but because I don’t want to feel like I’ve been manipulated by Big Booze, I’m gonna side with the students on this one. That said, while you have numerous Irish whiskeys to choose from, if you want to pay tribute to those who allegedly invented the drink, you should definitely go with Jameson’s.
Does a Green Tea Shot Contain Green Tea?
Nope! As I mentioned a moment ago, there are a couple of theories to explain the name. It’s either a corporate thing or a college thing. Perhaps the name is really just a way for its drinkers to feel good about their choices by invoking a healthy herbal tea and not, say, whiskey and flavored liqueur mixed with pop.

Tips & Tricks to Making a Perfect Green Tea Shot
- You can make your own sour mix by combining 1 part lemon juice, 1 part lime juice, and 2 parts simple syrup.
- Freeze your glasses ahead of time to ensure the shots are sufficiently chilled.
- Choose a blended whiskey (e.g. Canadian or American), as opposed to scotches or bourbons, which may bear too bold a taste.
- To make a mocktail version of this drink, switch out the whiskey for coconut water and a bit of lime juice.
FAQs
Of course you can! I recommend doubling the ingredient portions and sipping it from a rocks glass over ice. For a garnish, add a slice of lime.
This drink will run you around 140 calories, with a majority coming from the peach schnapps. Use a diet soda to cut that number down a tad, and make your own sour mix to avoid the added sugars you might find in the store-bought stuff.
Any leftovers should be stored in an airtight container and kept in the fridge for no longer than three days. I don’t recommend freezing.
