If we can’t legally make every day a holiday then we should at least be able to drink like every day is a holiday with this recipe for the Daiquiri. You probably associate this cocktail with sun-drenched sabbaticals spent down south but they can be enjoyed whenever you feel inclined (yes, being an adult has its perks every now and then).
To trace the history of this delicious drink, you need to go back to the Spanish-American war of 1898 in Cuba. Its creator, an American engineer named Jennings Stockton Cox, worked in the village called—wait for it—Daiquiri. Cox simply took advantage of the ingredients that surrounded him—rum, lime, and sugar—to make what he called a Rum Sour, a Cuban version of a Whiskey Sour. But at some point, the name was changed to honor the town in which it was first concocted. It reached the States in 1909 by a naval officer, an associate of Cox.
What I like about the Daiquiri is that it’s a sunshiney drink that doesn’t require intense mixing or blending; its allure is in its simplicity. It goes down nicely and isn’t too tart, sour, or sweet. You can add a level of sweetness with our Strawberry Daiquiri or lean into the tang by making a cousin of the Daiquiri: the Margarita. My recommendation? Try the original Daiquiri then get creative with which direction you choose to take it in. Happy sipping!
can i serve these as frozen daiquiris?
Yes, you can. While I subscribe to the notion that Daiquiris can be enjoyed any time of year, if it’s a particularly hot summer day, you can blend up some ice and enjoy it as a slushy beverage. Just add the ingredients below to a blender along with 2 cups of ice. Blend until the desired consistency is attained. Tip: If you want to make a fruity Daiquiri, add fresh fruit to the blender along with the other ingredients.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 oz. light rum
- 1 oz. fresh lime juice
- 3/4 oz. simple syrup

Tips & Tricks to Making a Perfect Daiquiri
- Use that shot glass to get the balance right. You can adjust afterwards if the original ratio is not up to snuff.
- Choose a high-quality rum.
- Shake well… then shake some more. Aim for 15–20 seconds to ensure the ingredients are sufficiently chilled and mixed.
- Use a fine strainer after shaking to remove any slivers of ice from your cocktail.
- To make your own simple syrup, mix 1 part water with 1 part sugar. If you want a healthier version, you can make Honey Simple Syrup!
FAQs
This Daiquiri will run you around 195 calories. As with all cocktails, this number will vary depending on the brand of rum and whether you’re using store-bought lime juice or your own.
Pour your shaken mix into either a cocktail or martini glass. Both are short with a wide mouth.
If you have leftovers, just pour the mix into a mason jar or some other airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Why not? Put the mix in a mason jar (be sure to leave half an inch of space at the top for expansion!) and then store in the freezer. It should last for up to a month in there. When you want to enjoy again, either let it thaw completely in the fridge or wait until it’s halfway through defrosting and turn it into a slushy treat!
I use light rum for this recipe because of its mellow taste but it’s entirely up to you. Aged rums will add depth while a flavored rum (think Malibu) will kiss it with a taste of coconut.
Other Cocktails You Might Like To Try
The Painkiller: 2 oz. dark rum, 1 oz. orange juice, 4 oz. pineapple juice, 1 oz. cream of coconut
Pina Colada: 1 1/2 oz. light rum, 2 oz. pineapple juice, 2 oz. cream of coconut
Classic Margarita: 2 oz. tequila, 1 oz. triple sec, 1 oz. lime juice
Daiquiri Mocktail: Replace the rum with a non-alcoholic version or omit it altogether. For mocktails I would add some flavored syrups to make the drink more interesting.
