The Program Overview. For anyone who wishes to become a qualified yoga teacher, the 200-hour yoga teacher training course is the foundation. Some consider it the bachelor’s degree of yoga! Although not mandatory, getting your certification before you begin teaching is recommended.
The course is devised to be suitable to all yogi enthusiasts who wish to deepen their knowledge about the whole sphere of yoga. Tuition should strike the balance between theoretical and practical learning.
Course Content
All yoga schools and institutions set their own curriculum, however, the rule of thumb is that it corresponds to the guidelines set out by the Yoga Alliance. If your school is a registered yoga school (RYS) it will follow their schedule exactly.
Whether you complete your 200-hour yoga teacher training online or at an ashram or school, the course content will follow the same basic structure. It should strike a balance between physical practice of asanas, meditation and theoretical study.
Teaching Methodology
The 200-hour yoga teacher training program is very comprehensive. Your tuition will be administered by professional instructors who are there to inform, educate, support and inspire you. A typical course will follow the following content:
-
- Anatomy: In order to practice as a yoga teacher, you need to understand the body’s muscles, joints and tissues
-
- Asana: You will practice your asanas at least several hours per day under the watchful eye of your yoga teacher trainer
-
- Meditation & pranayama: All yoga teacher trainer syllabuses dedicate a daily practice of both silent and guided meditations as well as pranayama techniques, and how to teach them
-
- Philosophy & history: Occasionally, you will be invited to swap your mat for your pen and delve into yoga’s spiritual ancestry and the Eight Limbs of Yoga
-
- Teaching methods: This module covers how to communicate with your class and address the needs of individual students. You’ll also gain awareness of best practices for demonstration and safe hands-on assistance
-
- Business of yoga: Your trainer will equip you with an overview of the industry to help you find your yogi feet!
A typical day at a full-time yoga retreat will start early, with meditation, pranayama and asana practice prior to breakfast. After that, your day may be broken down into studying philosophy, history, anatomy and methodology. Before dinner, you will usually have a second round of asana practice.
If you are studying your 200-hour yoga teacher training online then the methodology must contain contact hours with your instructor (usually over Zoom). Besides that, you will be provided with video tutorials and reading materials on which you will be quizzed about throughout the duration of study.
Requirements
Most schools do not specify a minimum degree of yoga practice. The 200-hour yoga teacher training is open to all with an interest in yoga.
Some schools will impose that their students have developed a consistent practice of yoga. For example, practising asanas 3-5 days a week for at least 3, 6, or in some cases 12, months. Others would recommend their prospective intake to have at least been to a few beginner classes.
In yoga, advanced doesn’t equate to being able to master the most advanced poses. But rather, arrives on the mat with positivity, a willingness to learn and awareness of their body’s limits.
Duration
The wonderful thing about studying as a yoga teacher is that the time it takes to complete the course is totally up to you. Many trainees opt to complete their yoga teacher training 200-hour course at a retreat which can be as short as 15 days. Mind you, that is very intense! The most popular retreats usually spread your studies over the course of three to four weeks.
If you are unable to go to a yoga teacher training retreat you have two options. You can study part-time at a school in your neighbourhood. On average, part-time study will take three to five months to complete.
Alternatively, you can embrace the power harnessed by the internet and complete your 200-hour yoga teacher training online. This way, you set your own pace.
Course Fees
The cost of the yoga teacher training 200-hour at a retreat will typically start at around $1,000. However, this will depend on a number of circumstances. The fee will likely take into account whether accommodation and meals are provided. If so, whether that is budget or luxury standard. A registered yoga school (RYS) accredited by the Yoga Alliance may charge inflated rates. Exotic locations and luxury retreats may charge upwards of $2,000.
Studying your self-paced 200-hour yoga teacher training online should not exceed $1,000.
If you complete your course online before 30 June 2020, you will be able to register with Yoga Alliance as a registered yoga teacher.
