The Program Overview. A 300-hour yoga teacher training course is an advanced level of training. This course is more intense than the 200-hour YTT, for students are motivated to hone their technique with vigorous training. As with the 200-hour training, there is no mandatory requirement to teach upon competition. However, those who do wish to progress as yoga instructors will find the course beneficial.
As with the initial course, your 300-hour YTT can be completed remotely or at a yoga school or retreat.
Course Content
All yoga schools and institutions set their own curriculum, however the rule of thumb is that it corresponds to the guidelines set out by the Yoga Alliance. If your school is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) it will follow their schedule exactly.
Whether you complete your 300-hour yoga teacher training online or at an ashram or school, the course content will follow the same basic structure. In comparison with the 200-hour YTT, the 300-hour YTT is considered noticeably more challenging.
Teaching Methodology
A typical 300-hour yoga teacher training course will follow the following content:
-
- Techniques, training and practice: Covering asanas, pranayamas and meditation as well as other traditional yoga techniques such as kriyas, mantras and kriyas. You will practice the techniques yourselves and gain an understanding of how to teach them.
- Teaching methodology: This will enhance the foundations of your 20-hour YTT to develop your own teaching style. Topics typically cover communication, boundaries, observation, assisting and correcting.
- Anatomy and physiology: This module typically addresses bodily systems, organs, chakras and energy anatomy. You will gain more insight into how anatomy and physiology through yoga practice can benefit the body.
- Philosophy, lifestyle and ethics for yoga teachers: You will deepen your studies through traditional yoga texts and cover essential ethics to become a professional yoga instructor.
- Practinum: You will develop your teaching style through physical practice and will be expected to lead classes to your peers.
As with the 200-hour YTT, you can expect long days which will be spread across the units listed above.
If you are studying your 300-hour yoga teacher training online then you should expect 150 contact hours to be conducted with your instructor over Zoom (or equivalent).
Besides that, you will be provided with video tutorials and reading materials on which you will be quizzed about throughout the duration of study.
Requirements
To enroll in a 300-hour YTT you must have completed your 200-hour yoga teacher training course. This may have been completed online or at a physical school or retreat.
You can leave as much or as little time between the two as you wish. Many students prefer to consolidate the learnings of the initial 200-hour YTT before progressing to the advanced level.
Duration
Your 300 hours can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you opt to study full-time at a retreat or school, the average duration you can complete it is between four to five weeks. the minimum duration you can complete it in is three weeks. But, this does depend on the individual school.
If you are unable to commit to full-time study, you can complete your 300-hour training part-time. This can take place in the evenings and at weekends at a school local to you.
Alternatively, if you decide to study yoga remotely, an online 300-hour YTT will usually be self-paced. This means that you can approach the studies as quickly or as fast as you prefer.
Course Fees
Course fees for a yoga teacher training 300-hour depend on a number of factors. The average cost of a retreat will typically start at around $1,500. As with all teacher trainings, the fee will depend on whether accommodation and meals are provided, and the duration. You might find a deal and be able to spend closer to $1,000. A luxury retreat in a far-flung tropical destination can exceed $5,000.
A Registered Yoga School (RYS) accredited by the Yoga Alliance may charge higher rates.
Studying your self-paced 300-hour yoga teacher training online will cost around $1,000, although some institutions charge double that.
If you complete your course online before 30 June 2020, you will be able to register with Yoga Alliance as a registered yoga teacher.
