Ajna Chakra – Third Eye of Intuition and Insight

Introduction
Ajna Chakra or Third Eye Chakra is the sixth of the human energy centres and the door to higher consciousness, intuition, and inner intelligence. It is located between the eyebrows, where the subtle and the physical intersect, where thought commingles with perception, and where the spiritual eye begins to develop. When lower chakras are balanced and the heart is open, energy streams into this centre of awareness. The Third Eye is the symbol of “jnana”, knowing not by reason or mind but by silent knowing of the soul. It’s where duality falls away and inner realities of life are known.
The Ajna Chakra isn’t gazing “toward the future.” It’s gazing at the present, just wholly and unobstructed. It enables you to see your patterns, your projections, and your purpose from a place of centred awareness. It opens the way to clarity, insight, intuition, imagination, and access to the higher self. An open Third Eye connects the two realms of spirit and matter. You cease responding mechanically to life and start responding consciously. You rely on your intuitive suggestions, your visions, your body’s whispers, and life itself begins to be choreographed by a wisdom beyond our own moving through you.

Symbolism & Core Associations
Location: Centre of the forehead, between the eyebrows
Element: Light (or referred to elsewhere outside the element’s consciousness itself)
Colour: Indigo, the dark blue hue of twilight, representing mystery, depth, and clarity
Mantra: Om, the cosmic primal sound, representing pure awareness
Sense: Mind and perception Gland: Pituitary gland, the master gland which controls all hormonal function
Symbol: A double-petaled lotus, symbolising duality becoming one sun and moon forces (Pingala and Ida) uniting, or intellect and intuition
Deity Correspondence: Shakti and Shiva coming together in union, perceiving awareness beyond all duality
In balance, the Third Eye opens you up to higher levels of awareness. You feel synchronicities, pure intuition, and a solid inner guidance. Decisions naturally flow from inner oneness, not external affirmation.
Blocked, you become lost, feel disconnected, fuzzy, or too rational. The head takes over, leading to confusion, overthinking, and a lack of trust in your inner eye or instinct.

Psychological & Emotional Themes
The Ajna Chakra controls sight, the mind’s eye, clarity of the mind, and intuition. It enables you to be conscious of the distinction between what is and isn’t real, between what your ego would like to believe and that which you realise your soul is aware of.
When in balance, you possess a clear mind and directed intent. You can visualise your vision and make it manifest with an intentional purpose. Your inner knowing feels dependable; your dreams are discerning; and your mind’s eye is fueled by higher purpose.
Indicators of a Balanced Third Eye Chakra:
- Depth of intuition and responsiveness to inner voice
- Clarity of thought and decision-making
- Accuracy in being able to visualise and manifest
- Detachment from ego and external validation
- Rich imagination, visionary thinking, and inner peace
Blockage or Imbalance Symptoms:
- Over-thinking or rationalising
- Mental clutter, cloudiness, or distraction
- Detachment from instinct and inner guidance
- Headaches, eye strain, sinus
- Insomnia or nightmare-filled sleep
- Escape or spiritual hedonism (fantasy without base)
If underactive, you will second-guess yourself constantly, overthink using logic, and become trapped in thinking loops.
When overactive, you lose yourself in illusion, seeing everything symbolically, avoiding reality, or engaging in “spiritual bypassing.”
The balance is having sight of both the physical and the spiritual worlds, without being absent from either.

Physical Manifestations
Physically, Ajna Chakra is associated with the eyes, forehead, brain, pituitary gland, and nervous system. It controls hormonal balance, sleep cycle, and mental clarity.
Blockages can be manifested as:
- Headache or migraine
- Eye strain or vision
- Hormonal disorders
- Sinus pressure
- Sleeping disorder or nightmares
- Neurological stress
From a holistic point of view, all these symptoms occur when you close your inner reality or live out of touch with intuitive awareness. You begin to heal as soon as you feel confident about your perception and bring awareness into your mind space.

Healing & Balancing the Third Eye Chakra
Balancing the Ajna Chakra involves soothing the mind and creating a space for inner perception to open. Unlike lower chakras, which flourish through activity and earthiness, this chakra evolves from quiet, will, and awareness.
- Meditation & Mindfulness
As for energising the Third Eye, daily meditation is the best way. Focus on the area between the eyebrows, inhale and exhale deeply, and whisper “Om”.
Imagine indigo light emanating outward, purifying confusion and lighting your mind with comprehension.
- Consciousness of Thought
Watch your thoughts dispassionately. Pay attention to what occurs when you become mired in the past or fear the future. Consciousness itself starts to clear mental rubbish.
- Limiting Stimulation
The world we live in now overstimulates the Third Eye with constant information. Limiting screen time, computer desktop chaos, and hyperactivity diminishes intuitive sensitivity.
- Trust in Intuition
Begin small. Trust your gut instincts on little things — which way, when, or whom to call. The more you justify your intuitive shots, the more they will build up.
- Dream Work
Maintain a dream journal. Record your dreams the moment you awaken. The longer you continue, the more your subconscious will share patterns and messages that will facilitate your growth.
- Diet & Detox
Eat foods that purify the pineal gland: raw cacao, blueberries, spirulina, and lemon water. Do not ingest fluoride and processed sugar, which obscure mental clarity.
- Essential Oils & Crystals
Apply sandalwood, frankincense, lavender, or rosemary essential oils for awareness and clarity. Amethyst, lapis lazuli, and sodalite crystals enhance intuition and soothe mental churning.
-
Inner Work & Journaling Prompts
Journaling engages both sides of the brain, uniting logic and intuition. Take these questions to investigate further with your Third Eye:
When do I disregard my intuition even though I know what’s real?
What habitual dreams, signs, or synchronicities am I currently receiving?
How do I discern between fear-based thought and intuitive knowing?
What illusions am I still holding onto about myself, love, or life?
How can I build more presence and silence into my life?
What am I willing to learn about myself without defending?
Write slowly and naturally, not to uncover answers but to give them space to emerge out of your noticing.
-
Ajna Chakra affirmations
Say these daily, perhaps in meditation or in quiet reflection, gazing out to the horizon:
“I trust my intuition and inner wisdom.”
“I perceive through illusion and respect truth.”
“My mind is clear, focused, and attuned to my higher self.”
“I am guided by inner light in all decisions.”
“I release thinking and attend to inner knowing.”
“The vision for my life is clear and guided by purpose.”

Mini Guided Meditation: Opening the Third Eye
Sit with a straight back.
Breathe deeply three times, releasing the physical body.
Gingerly bring the attention to the area between the eyebrows.
Notice a white, indigo-coloured light slowly moving in the centre.
With every breath, the light grows, filling your mind, dispelling confusion.
Silently repeat the “Om” chant to yourself; let its vibration vibrate through your forehead and mind.
Notice the peaceful quiet descend, as if the universe itself is ready to whisper sage counsel.
Silently ask yourself:
“What truth must I see clearly now?”
Trust the first feeling, image, or word that comes up.”
Sit in silence, taking in this awareness.
When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes, rooting the insight into your body.

Integration & Closing Message
The Ajna Chakra instructs that real vision doesn’t arise in your eyes; it arises from the clarity of consciousness.
It’s the seat of wisdom that looks not through form but through essence, beyond right or wrong, past or future, success or failure.
When this chakra is activated, you no longer look for answers elsewhere. You turn over the shoulders of the illusions that once made you walk behind your fears and reactions. Life is a mirror, a reflection of your awareness.
When your Third Eye is opened in balance, your connection to reality is transformed. You know that all that is happening is purposeful and fleeting. You respond with wisdom, converse with innocence, and travel through life by faith rather than by will.
The Ajna Chakra whispers:
“All that you seek, you already know. The answers lie in the silence of your being.”
