This Fish Taco Sauce will elevate your Taco Tuesday!
As I write this, I’m getting ready to celebrate my favorite day of the week—Taco Tuesday! Here in Southern California, Taco Tuesday feels like a weekly holiday, complete with traditions like homemade margaritas, early ends to the workday, and, of course, beachside views to enjoy your drinks, chips, and tacos. And here, there’s a special element: fresh-from-the-sea, lightly battered fish tacos. I mean, we are by the water, after all!
Fish tacos are a staple on Cali-Mex menus, but they’re never complete without a signature sauce. After eating plenty of tacos, I can confidently say this is the best fish taco sauce—a little tangy, a little spicy, and full of flavor!
The inspiration for this recipe began back in college, when Taco Tuesdays were more like midweek fiestas. We’d gather at a friend’s house, bringing drinks, snacks, and dips to escape schoolwork and life’s stress.
It was then I discovered this super easy, super delicious fish taco sauce, shared by a friend of a friend. I’ve been making it ever since! It’s not only perfect for fish tacos, but it also pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes—and it takes just ten minutes to make!
Is Fish Taco Sauce Healthy?
Fish taco sauce is an easy way to add extra flavor to your food without having to resort to store-bought sauces full of unhealthy additives. It’s made with just a few simple ingredients, and while it is high in fat, it can be enjoyed in moderation with healthy dishes. You can reduce the fat by subbing the mayo and/or sour cream for Greek yogurt. Omitting the salt is also an option. For a vegan version, replace the mayo and sour cream with vegan versions of these products.
Note that fish taco sauce, despite its name, is also vegetarian-friendly! It doesn’t contain any actual fish. And BTW, I’ve tried it on these Tasty Tofu Tacos. Highly recommended!
A Customizable Condiment
I love sauces of all kinds, but I’ve become especially keen on making them in my own kitchen. That’s because making your own sauce means you have total creative freedom to customize it to your liking! Want a spicier sauce? Add more hot sauce, or even some real, fresh peppers. Want a little more zest? Crank up the lime juice. Looking for something sweeter? Get creative and add a little agave or honey to your sauce. The whole point of a good sauce is to enhance the flavor of your dish, so feel free to experiment with the ingredients you love.

FAQs & Tips
This fish taco sauce can be kept in the fridge (stored in a jar) for up to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended as it will affect the consistency of the sauce.
Fish taco sauce is made with a very small amount of hot sauce, so if you’re sensitive to spice, you may want to skip or substitute this ingredient. A teaspoon of ketchup or tomato paste would work well, too. You can also add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika powder for a smoky flavor without the heat.
While you’ll want to refrigerate your sauce for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, how you choose to serve it is entirely up to you. You can lightly heat up your sauce in the microwave before serving it. Just keep an eye that it doesn’t start to boil.
Serving Suggestions
It goes without saying that this fish taco sauce is delicious drizzled over fish or Shrimp Tacos. But this sauce is actually a light and zesty flavor addition to lots of meals! Try it as a dipping sauce for your Popcorn Shrimp, Fish and Chips, or even with a light entrée like Cilantro Lime Chicken. Fish taco sauce is also great on a variety of tacos, like my favorite vegetarian/vegan Mushroom Tacos.
Don’t forget the margaritas, chips, and salsa. Happy Taco Tuesday!
