Whip up this classic Sour Cream Dip to add zest (and an element of fun!) to everything from chicken wings to chili.
At our house, Super Bowl Sunday always meant my mother would bring out a huge platter of snacks and tasty finger foods. For me, this was always the highlight of this much-anticipated event. In fact, I think I cheered more for her mouthwatering spread of treats than for our favorite team! Opening a bag of chips or trail mix was not an option. She spent hours in the kitchen making everything from deviled eggs to spicy chicken wings, but her true culinary prowess was showcased in her dips. And no dip disappeared quicker than her sour cream dip!
Merging just the right balance of creaminess and tang, this cooling dip comes together in minutes, pairs beautifully with a wide variety of snack foods and can even be used as a sauce to finish off spicy dishes like chili.
Is Sour Cream Dip Healthy?
Though undeniably fun to eat, dips cannot really be considered healthy. This sour cream dip is high in fat, so either use it sparingly or indulge on special occasions—making sure it isn’t only chicken wings you’re dipping into it, but also crisp, raw veggies! You can, of course, use low-fat sour cream and mayonnaise, but that won’t boost the dip’s nutritional content. For a vegan version, simply replace the sour cream and mayonnaise with vegan varieties.
How Can I Make My Dip Even Tastier?
With its tart and tangy goodness, this sour cream dip is delicious as is. But there’s nothing stopping you from dressing it up a little! To add a Spanish touch, replace the garlic powder with a teaspoon of crushed garlic (or ready-made garlic paste) and add a teaspoon of smoked (or spicy) paprika powder.
Other additions, like sun-dried tomato paste, roasted and puréed beets, or mashed avocado will add both color and flavor to your dip.

FAQs & Tips
The dip can be prepared in advance and will stay fresh in the fridge (if stored in an airtight container) for up to 5 days.
Though it couldn’t be called a sour cream dip anymore, you can replace the sour cream with Greek yogurt or crème fraîche. In that case, add a little lemon juice to boost the freshness and mouth-puckering acidity of the dip.
If you’d like a slightly thicker consistency, replace half the sour cream with softened cream cheese, or let the dip sit overnight.
Serving Suggestions
Chips (especially the thick-cut or crinkled kind!) are a quintessential match for sour cream dip, but you can also pair it with fresh veggies such as carrot and celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, radishes, and broccoli florets. Baked BBQ Chicken Wings are a classic combination, too. The dip can also be used to add zest and freshness to dishes with warmer flavors. Try a dollop on Quick Baked Potatoes, Ground Chicken Tacos, or Spicy Chili.
