They’re so much better than store-bought!

We’ve all tried green bean casserole with canned fried onions on top, correct? It’s THE side dish at Thanksgiving, in my experience. And then the fried onions are strangely addictive. These, though, are such a game changer, they’re good enough to snack on while you’re watching a game! They’re good to dip. They’re good to top other casseroles. They’re just plain good.
I suggest making these for friends, so you don’t eat the entire batch yourself. The recipe is customizable though. You can choose a small onion and just fry enough for one or two people. This could easily turn into ‘girl dinner’.
You’ll love the crispy sweetness of these, and once you’ve tried them, I don’t think you’re going to be able to go back to the canned variety. Try them on this Easy Corn Casserole or this Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole. Maybe you should just take a look at 45 Healthy Casserole Recipes, because I am truly having a difficult time thinking of a casserole these wouldn’t go well with!
Are Gluten-Free Fried Onions Healthy?
OK, so they are fried. But they are onions. And onions are definitely a food to include often. They will provide serious flavonoids, which have a variety of health benefits including antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. These are gluten-free, and easily made dairy-free as well. The recipe suggests yellow onions, but it’s a fun experiment to taste test for yourself. You can try Vidalia or white onions or even purple onions.
What’s the difference between Yellow or Vidalia Onions?
Trick question. Vidalia is a type of yellow onion. Sometimes it’s called Sweet Vidalia, but that’s redundant. Vidalias are sweet. They also have a higher water content, so they may need to be cooked for slightly longer. As a bonus, yellow onions are often the least expensive.

FAQs & Tips
They can be made ahead and stored in a sealed container, at low temperature in a cool and dark place. They’re best (with the crispiest texture) hot out of the oven, though.
Cooked, cooled onions can be frozen in a muffin tin lined with plastic wrap. Once they are frozen solid, freeze each cute little pack separately in a larger freezer container. These little packs will be easier to unwrap and reheat by baking in a hot oven than if you had a large mass of the rings.
Add a tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of your choice of dairy-free milk, and behold, you have dairy-free buttermilk.
