Everyone knows homemade dip is better than store-bought dip!
Table of Contents
Who doesn’t love a good bowl of dip? Whether you’re using it with vegetables, chips, or something else, a little dip is sometimes all you need for a little snack or appetizer. It’s even better when you make it yourself rather than rely on store-bought dip. Onion dip has been around in some form or another since 1954 when someone had the bright idea of combining sour cream with onion soup. It was one of the great serendipitous discoveries in the history of snack food.
Of course, since that initial discovery, we’ve perfected the art of making homemade dip. It’s not quite as simple as combining sour cream and soup, but it’s surely something that can be done without much complication. All you have to do is caramelize some onions and mix them with a few other ingredients. Unlike store-bought dips, you’ll know exactly what’s in the dip because you’re the one making it. Did we mention that it’s also creamy, tangy, and packed with flavor? That’s another reason to give homemade onion dip a try.
If you happen to enjoy homemade dips, this onion dip isn’t your only option. We can also offer you a recipe for a Spinach Dip, a Vegan Spinach Dip or (if you’d like to stray a little from traditional options) try this tasty Cottage Cheese Dip. For folks who are hoping to avoid dairy, there’s also this Vegan Carrot Cake Dip with Spice Chips.
Is Onion Dip Healthy?
For the most part, the onion dip you make yourself is healthier than what you’ll find in stores because you know for certain that you’re not adding anything artificial. The eight grams of saturated fat per serving is one of the only drawbacks from a health perspective. Otherwise, there is a lot to like about this dip. It contains just 150 calories and 3 grams of sugar. Keep in mind that onions are packed with nutrients and have been shown to improve heart health, digestive health, and bone density, among other benefits.
Don’t rush…
Making a good dip can’t be rushed. The biggest key to making this recipe the right way is caramelizing the onions. When you do this, keep the heat relatively low so that the onions gradually caramelize. This will help to bring out more flavor. It’s also best to let the onions cool before adding them to the rest of the mixture. In fact, you may want to consider giving the onions and the rest of the mixture more time to sit in the fridge before serving. The flavor of the dip melds together better and becomes stronger the longer it sits, so making this dip a day or two ahead of time can be a good idea.
