As you may know, there is more than one way to cook a sweet potato. In fact, there are quite a few things you can do with a sweet potato. Typically, I’ve always put them in the oven because it seemed easy and hands-off. Plus, there was no arguing with the results. However, if you have a steamer basket, steaming your sweet potatoes might be the way to go. If nothing else, it’s worth a try.
In terms of convenience, steaming sweet potatoes is just as easy as baking them in the oven. Once you get a pot of water boiling and put the steaming basket in place, there isn’t much else to do. The results can be just as good as well. Steamed sweet potatoes come up moist and fluffy. They also taste no different from baked sweet potatoes. Of course, you’re still free to put whatever toppings you want on them.
Are Steamed Sweet Potatoes Healthy?
By steaming sweet potatoes, you don’t need to use any oil or additives, which helps sweet potatoes maintain their nutritional value. Typically, sweet potatoes are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, copper, and potassium. They also contain fiber, which among other things, is beneficial for your digestive tract.
The Right Potato…
For this recipe, try to use medium-sized sweet potatoes that are about eight ounces and have orange flesh. If the potatoes are significantly larger than that, they will require more time to steam properly. It can also be a good idea to let them sit for five minutes after cooking before slicing them open. From there, it’s all about adding whatever toppings you want; just keep in mind that this may impact the nutritional value of the sweet potatoes.

FAQs & Tips
It’s possible to peel and slice sweet potatoes 1 day ahead of time before steaming them. Just cover them and store them in the fridge overnight. Once cooked, the sweet potatoes can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months – just defrost in the fridge and reheat in the oven with a cover of aluminum foil when ready to eat.
To add a little extra something to these sweet potatoes, try a sprinkle of cinnamon, a drizzle of maple syrup or maybe even a dollop of Greek yogurt.
