Summertime spritzer, it’s a 2 ingredient not so sweet wine spritzer to beat the June heat!
Table of Contents
Populating city rooftops and garden parties, spritzers ooze summertime vibes, especially if you are poolside… I can’t think of a better drink in hand. It’s an ideal beverage for the summer months but really, so easy to make, you can whip it up any time of the year.
Spritzers are light, crisp and can be customized with various garnishes such as rosemary stalks, lemon or lime, colorful flowers or fresh berries. Another reason they rise to the top of people’s midsummer lineup; they are lower in caloric intake because the soda water and ice dilute the alcohol content. It’s the MOST perfect drink for the best time of year.
What is the Best Wine to Use to Make a Spritzer?
I will keep this real simple. Any white wine will do. It really depends on your taste. I DO NOT like sweet wine, so I prefer a super dry sauvignon blanc, anything really but a sweet moscato. Some would prefer a pinot grigio for its crisp taste and, fruit-forward flavor or an oaky chardonnay, but I stick to a dry sauv blanc to cool me off. The key to a great spritzer is to ensure both the wine and sparkling water are as cold as possible, which enhances the aromatics of the wine and can make a less impressive wine more enjoyable.
3 Key Ingredients all wine spritzers MUST have!
Wine, soda, and ice. The choice of wine and soda can make the spritzer either dry or sweet. You can’t go wrong with a classic club soda, but alternative flavored sparkling water works great too. Now onto the ice. Ice is listed as optional in this recipe because technically speaking you can make it without it… but it tastes best with it. I like to fill my glass with ice to the tippy top of the rim. The colder the better. You of course can make it without ice but would it still be considered a vibey summertime spritz?

FAQs & Tips
No need! It only takes two minutes to make, so wait to open your wine and club soda right before serving time. Just make sure to chill your ingredients ahead of time. The night before if not at least an hour before.

Any glass will do but I recommend you choose a wine glass with a long stem and a bowl wide enough to fill with ice for a proper spritz. As far as the garnishes go, your options are endless. Fresh strawberries, mint, grapefruit, orange, lemon, and lime all do. One of the most beautiful garnishes I have seen in a cocktail was a dehydrated dragon fruit. A vibrant pink rim with speckled grey polka dots in the center of a white backdrop. STUNNING.
Larger ice cubes are ideal as they help maintain a cooler temperature over a longer period of time without over-diluting the spritzer
Serving Suggestions
There are endless variations for this drink. First would be an alcohol-free version made with ginger beer, sparkling water and a dash of lime.
Sticking with the alcohol though, other options include the iconic Aperol Spritz, an Earl Grey Spritz (featuring sparkling wine and an Earl Grey tea-infused simple syrup) or a sangria – a classic wine-based cocktail. Try this easy, Frozen Sangria recipe here.
My personal, year-round, all-time favorite cocktail is the OG Dirty Martini. I had my first one with my Aunty Mia and haven’t looked back since. It was her signature drink, high in alcohol and low in everything else. It’s a sleek drink to have in hand, I prefer mine extra dirty with no vermouth. Warning: sip slowly.
