One strange thing about alcoholic beverages is that people love to drink them, but a decent amount do not like the taste of alcohol whatsoever! And this is exactly who the Gummy Bear Shot caters to. For all those 21st birthdays and bachelorette parties where you are not trying to end the night too quickly by drinking straight tequila, opt instead for a cute, colorful Gummy Bear Shot!
I know that wine, beer, and spirits have been around forever, but I’m not specifically sure about the history of the Gummy Bear Shot. I imagine people added whatever they could to make drinking easier on their palate, as bartenders and amateur drinkers do. There is a super fun martini bar in Las Vegas, called I Love Sugar, where they do a wonderful job of disguising the flavor of alcohol with sweets. Their entire cocktail menu is based on candy concoctions which are all ridiculously delicious. Maybe the Gummy Bear Shot came from here or at least helped inspire its creation.
The magic of the Gummy Bear Shot is that it tastes great with only four ingredients: cherry vodka, peach schnapps, pineapple juice, and a splash of lemon-lime soda. Well, five if you include the cute gummy bear garnish. But, my point, is you don’t have to go over the top like we do with some of our other fruity favorites like an icy Miami Vice. You simply add the ingredients, shake it like a Daiquiri, pour, and enjoy!
What About the actual Gummy Bear in the Drink?
This shot is named after the candy gummy bears – because that is what it tastes like. While we say garnish with a gummy bear, I would not drop it in the shot glass due to the fear of choking on it, maybe that’s me being boring and responsible. Also, unless you let the candy soak for a while, like several hours to a full day, it won’t absorb that much alcohol, therefore it won’t get you drunk. (However, do not let anyone underage eat the gummies once they have been in the alcohol.) You can incorporate them by having a cute candy dish on your home bar, or stick a stirrer through them like you would with cocktail olives.
What is the Best Vodka to Use to Make a Gummy Bear Shot?
I love using Three Olives Cherry to make gummy bear shots and many other fruity drinks. It’s a mid-level brand and pretty affordable comparatively. I had to make up a signature cocktail at my first bartending job. I was rather new to the mixology world, so I tried something simple, called The Sweet Melissa. It was a Shirley Temple with Three Olives Cherry, it was delicious and very similar to our Gummy Bear Shot!

FAQs & Tips
The Gummy Bear Shot is served in a shot glass and garnished with a gummy bear. You can also make it as a martini by pouring it into a martini glass.
While you can make a batch of these shots in advance, the pineapple juice will likely separate, so be prepared to shake again and leave out the lemon-lime soda until you are ready to serve.
Each shot has about 150 calories.
Do gummy bears come in different flavors? Yes! Feel free to use whatever fruity flavor you have on hand or like best. Stolichnaya makes a plethora of flavored vodka and they are all tasty (I have tried them all).
Serving Suggestions
While the Gummy Bear Shot is meant to be a shot, it can also be served as a cocktail or a martini. For a Gummy Bear cocktail, you will have a higher ratio of juice to liquor, just like a Fuzzy Navel. Use one oz. vodka, one oz. peach schnapps, 4 oz. of pineapple juice, and top with a splash of soda.
Martinis, or drinks served ‘up’, usually have a higher alcohol content and less juice or mixer. Follow the Gummy Bear Shot recipe as written, but use the portions and steps as we do in the Best Last Word Cocktail.
You can make a copycat Gummy Bear Shot into a yummy mocktail too! Just use grenadine, peach nectar, pineapple juice, a splash of lemon-lime soda, and add some gummy bears.
For fun, you could throw a kids-themed adult birthday party, think Peter Pan Syndrome. Serve your Gummy Bear Shots with classics like Chicken Tenders and Brie Grilled Cheese.
