Why is it that, most of us are always willing to treat ourselves to a nice dinner, yet rarely give the same attention to breakfast? For “the most important meal of the day,” it can certainly be overlooked. This recipe is here to remind you that breakfast doesn’t always have to be about sustenance, but can be special too. Because nothing says special quite like these decadent Nutella Crepes.
Hailing from Brittany, France circa the 13th century, crepes are believed to have been created by accident. French folklore tells the story of a housewife who accidentally spilled buckwheat porridge onto a flat cooking stone in a hot fireplace, resulting in something that resembled a modern-day crepe. Back then, wasting any food whatsoever was out of the question, so she ate it, and the rest is history, apparently.
Luckily, we’ve replaced stones with pans, and fireplaces with stovetops, which means this crepe recipe comes together super easily. We are also lucky enough to live in an age where Nutella – the ultra-delicious chocolate hazelnut spread – comes readily available in a jar at the grocery store. Combine the two and get ready to indulge in a breakfast that’s a total treat!

My Secret For Perfect Crepes
The super-light, thin texture of crepes is part of what makes them so delectable. If you want to be sure you achieve this when preparing your Nutella Crepes, it’s important not to skip one crucial step: chilling your batter in the fridge. By doing so, you’ll let the gluten particles in the flour absorb the liquid of the batter, helping the gluten to relax, which will give your crepes their signature silky smooth texture.

FAQs & Tips
Once you’ve made the batter for your Nutella Crepes and are ready to chill it in the fridge before cooking, make sure to cover it with plastic wrap or use a container with a lid. If you have leftover crepes, stack them with wax paper between each crepe and store them on a plate with plastic wrap or in an air-tight container. They will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to eat your leftover crepes, remove them from the fridge 30 minutes before serving so that they return to room temperature, or heat them in the microwave for 15-30 seconds.
It’s true that Nutella naturally has a thicker texture that you may find difficult to spread evenly onto your crepes. If you add it to your crepes when they are still quite warm, the heat of the crepes should melt the Nutella slightly, making it more silky. You can also add Nutella to a bowl with a drop or two of water, stir it to combine, then spread the thinned-out Nutella onto your crepes.
As long as you’ve made your batter according to the instructions, your crepes should be the right texture for easy flipping. Make sure you are using a non-stick pan as well. A crepe will be ready to be flipped after the bottom is set, after about 1-2 minutes. Use a spatula to first loosen the edges, then get your spatula under the entire crepe and flip it in one swift movement, if you can.
