An easy and healthy alternative to store-bought granola, this is a great way to control what you put in your body.
Table of Contents
The origins of granola are probably Scandinavian, where Muesli has been a breakfast staple for years. There are literally dozens of versions out there, using a variety of grains, nuts and dried fruits.
This granola has a short ingredient list and is easy to make. Macadamia nuts provide a rich, almost creamy texture and the cinnamon provides a sense of warmth to something that is usually eaten cold. We particularly like this one with Greek Yoghurt, though milk also works well.
Is Cinnamon Granola Healthy?
Home made granola is certainly healthier than the store bought, mass produced stuff. While grocery store granolas are marketed as healthy, they often contain high amounts of high fructose corn syrup and palm kernel oil, both of which are nutritionally bereft and high in calories. Flavor enhancers, anti-clumping agents and fillers are also common.
This granola uses natural ingredients, and while it is still relatively high in calories it’s packed with natural sources of fibre, healthy fats and low GI sugars. It’s definitely a healthier choice.
Granola vs Muesli
Granola and muesli have many similarities, including most of their ingredients and many of the health benefits. The main difference is that Granola is baked and usually contains added sweeteners such as honey or syrup, while muesli is raw and sweetened with dried fruits. In general terms, Muesli is lower calorie and less sweet, making it ideal for those counting calories, while granola, with it’s healthy fats and protein, is ideal for active people who want to maintain their energy levels throughout the day.

Tips and Tricks to Make a Perfect Cinnamon Granola
- Make your granola extra crunchy by baking it in a thin layer. If you like it a bit chewier you can make the layer a little thicker.
- Let the granola cool completely and be gentle when you transfer it to a container. This will help keep the clusters intact.
- Feel free to experiment with different nuts and seeds, or try a few drops of vanilla extract.
- Sugar free syrups are available from health food stores. They are a good option if you are concerned about their blood sugar.
FAQs
Try adding a little extra syrup and extending the bake time by 10 minutes. Remember to be gentle when transferring the granola and let it cool completely first.
Cinnamon is known to help regulate blood sugar levels, but you can try different spices or none at all. Green cardamom or dried ginger will change the flavour profile of your granola.
Yes it is, but some oats are processed in facilities that also process wheat. Read you package of oats carefully if you’re gluten intolerant.
Make Ahead and Storage
This granola will keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for about a month. If you plan on storing it longer, we recommend refrigeration. Granola does not need to be frozen for long term storage.
