If you’re not breathing, you’re not doing yoga. This is one of the many mottos of the Buddhi Yoga Teacher Training. There are several breathing principles that are very important to understand for all yoga teachers. You will learn and teach each other many different breathing techniques, or pranayama, over the course of the three month course. Our yoga training San Diego covers the breath from three key perspectives: anatomical, physiological and energetic. You will also learn a system of movement that is based on the rhythm and flow of the breath. Yoga is a body mind practice. The breath is an excellent and accessible way for you and your future students to experience the body mind connection.

The Anatomy of Breath
The main muscle of the breath is the diaphragm. This will be one of the main muscles we will be studying. You will also learn about the accessory muscles of inspiration. When you begin teaching, you will find (and perhaps you will see this in yourself as well), that many people use the accessory muscles to breathe. This creates tension and discomfort in the neck and shoulders as well as results in a weak and under-used diaphragm. Teaching people how to breathe properly is an invaluable gift you can share with students in a wide variety of settings.
The Physiology of Breath
How we breathe has a strong impact on the physiology of the body. One way this impact is evident is in the autonomic nervous system. Don’t worry if you have no idea what that is! This training will give you a basic breakdown of the ANS and its two main components, the Sympathetic Nervous System and the Parasympathetic Nervous System. Deep, slow breathing initiates the relaxation response in the body. Even if the body is doing something that is very physically challenging, if the breath is deep and steady, you are in a healing state. As yoga teachers, we do not diagnose, heal or cure. We are space holders and facilitators. When you teach students to breathe and guide them through different types of breathwork or pranayama, you are facilitating a healing state. Teach the breath and you are teaching yoga.
The Energetics of Breath
The yogic system believes that the universe and all that is within it is enlivened by PRANA. Most eastern philosophies and medical system acknowledge the existence of a force or energy that give us life. From a yogic perspective, Prana flows throughout the universe. In the human system it flows through us via the breath. Prana is a fundamental principle for all of yogic energetic anatomy. As we learn about the chakras and the nadis, you will see how maximizing the flow of breath or Prana through the system is the only way for our energetic systems to thrive.
Movement Principles of Breath
The Buddhi Yoga Training is a vinyasa based program. As you will learn, vinyasa is all about the connection between breath and movement. When it comes to sequencing and how you move between poses and while in a pose, it all depends on the the inhale and the exhale. For example, in a sun salutation, we reach the arms up on the inhale and fold forward on the exhale. From an energetic, anatomical and physiological perspective, this combination of breath and movement makes sense. Understanding which part of the breath goes along with which movements is a central theme to this training. This will transform your own practice as well as give you a solid and practical foundation to teach from.
