This year, ‘staycationing’ has become the new way to holiday. We’re blessed in Ireland to have wonderful places to visit for the weekend or day trips. Recently we went to Kerry – here is our 5-day staycation itinerary for cycling the Ring of Kerry. It’s the perfect trip if you love the outdoors, hiking, adventures, camping and embracing nature and the elements!
As a newbie cyclist I did a lot of research online about what I needed to bring with me as I honestly had no idea of what to expect for a cycle trip. I had no point of reference regarding how many kilometres we would cycle each day, what level of fitness I would need, what cycling gear I had to get, or even what type of bike would be best. It took a lot of online research and product reviews to establish my ‘packing items’ list and a rough idea of the route we would take.
So, I decided to compile my research and share it to save you time! This is nowhere near a perfect guide, but it’s good to have a baseline to work with which you can tweak yourself to suit your own needs.
Also, you can check out my top tips for cycling the Ring of Kerry here.
Below I have outlined the 5-day route we took.
There are two further alternative routes I found, but we didn’t do them this time. However, we’re hoping to cycle the Ring of Kerry again next summer, with all four route variations:
- Killarney to Glenbeigh via Beaufort, Lickeen Forest and Caragh Lake
- Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen via the L4015 (12km outside Glenbeigh take the right turn for Kells onto the L4015)
- Sneem to Kenmare via the R568 and through Blackwater Bridge
- Moll’s Gap to Killarney via the Gap of Dunloe
