The First Thing:
The first thing to understand is that this type of resonance is not an audible thing. I mean you can’t exactly hear it. Yes sensitive people can be aware of it in the subtlety of the pulse, the breath and the mood. But this type of resonance is not a special sound. It’s really a different type of energy, a silent pattern within the enclosed space of your body.
When it happens for extended periods you might notice a shift in the way you feel. Since the dawn of time humans have been able to experience this small quiet introspective potential. Many cultures have described the resonance phenomenon with the poetry of mysticism and developed methods to achieve it using breathing and vocalising techniques.
Musical resonance occurs when sound waves add to each other within a specific band increasing the volume of that tone. This can happen within a room or an instrument and also within our vocal cavities to produce sounds which just seem to emerge louder than others. Similarly physiological resonance is a collection of wave forms with a specific peak that is unique to each individual depending on the size and shape of the vessels and the volume of blood in circulation.
The Physiology of Resonance:
The physiology of resonance begins with the frequency of breathing . That means breathing with the same time in and out with regular repetition. The speed of the heart beat increases with each inhalation and decreases with exhalation. When we breathe gently using our diaphragm with a perfectly smooth rhythm this causes the change in Heart Rate to become maximal, so large it can even be felt. Interestingly research has shown that peoples affinity for empathy is related to their ability to perceive their own Heart Beat.
Now because the amount blood held in the lungs increases and decreases as our diaphragm moves and chest expands our blood pressure changes. This change in blood pressure occurs throughout the body also with the same rhythmic waves. Breathing is where we get the frequency from and these other two systems of Heart Rate and blood pressure fall into dance with the timekeeping breath.
To complete the picture we should know that when we breath in the heart speeds up but peripheral blood pressure falls as blood is pulled into the lungs. This happens to maximise the efficient oxygenation of red blood cells. When we breath out the heart slows down and peripheral blood pressure raises to best supply the oxygenated blood to the body.
So by breathing with just the right fixed frequency the heart rate and blood pressure fluctuate in perfect oppositional flow and this gives the best oxygenation and requires the least effort and avoids resistance. This is resonance. Without resonance with the heart and blood pressure change with breathing but in a less harmonic way.
Resonance is Special:
Resonance is special because even though its dependant on physical properties it’s actually orchestrated by the autonomic nervous system. Meaning our subliminal mind can produce and access this efficient energetic state. Of course we can consciously produce this effect by breathing with a fixed frequency.
There are many breathing patterns and exercise to produce various effects and states but RFB holds a special place because it has such a balancing and rejuvenating effect.
Finding your own personal resonance frequency requires measuring the pulse as it changes in concert with the regulated breath. For everyone resonance occurs within a range from 4.25-6.75 seconds per inhale and exhale. But for most people it happens between 5.5 and 6.0 seconds.
The easiest technique to use RFB is to listen to music and synchronise breathing with the music which is holding the time. The best results happen when the body is free from muscle tension. Any position which can be still and comfortable and with soft belly breathing.[/vc_column_text]
Resonant Frequency Music
After years using various audio methods to breathe with it seemed necessary to produce a more delicate tool for this purpose
Together with Derrick Scott van Heerden we have produced a whole album of 90 minute tracks to Yoga to. Soundmoves incorporates RFB into Yoga Practice and classes with music to hold the time for breathing.
I recommend the 6.0 second track for soft and sensitive Yoga and the 4.5 second tracks for dynamic Yoga keeping while the physiological state of calm.
We mapped the entire Resonance Range on the album below. The music has Theta wave entrainment made with Pythagorean just intonation and five levels of depth.
